Ice, ice baby!

Hola all!

We are currently in El Calefate and are almost set for our trekking in Torres del Paine. We've done a bit of training (our treks in Bariloche) and have a bus booked to get us down to Puerto Natales tomorrow from where we'll enter the National Park.

Our treks in Bariloche were fantastic.

We met up with Pablo early on the Tuesday morning and caught the bus to Catedral which, in the Winter, is the local ski resort. From there we hiked to Refugio Frey which is located close to the top of Cerro (Mount) Frey. The route was 10km each way and took us along the bottom of mountain above a lake, where we watched the sun rise as we walked (yes we were up and out that early!), and then up the hillside through woodland. The refugio was full of climbers who were scaling the rocky peaks behind. We had our lunch by the mountain top lake and lay in the sun for a while before making the return trip.

The following day, we were up early again and caught a bus to the bottom of Cerro Lopez. The first half of the trek up was really steep through woodland and up loose sandy slopes. The second section was along a gravel track which took us up to the Refugio (a vivid pink building). The views were again breathtaking and we basked in the sunshine at the top. We slid / ran / jumped back down the hill (quite an adventure with the loose sandy slopes) in time to catch the bus. That evening we went to a restaurant that had been recommended by an Australian (Michael) that we had met on our Punta Tombo tour and had one of the most amazing steak dinners we have ever had!

To be continued... (about to have dinner at our hostel!)
