Wildlife watching etc.

Hi everyone,

Since we last posted we have been busy, mainly wildlife watching! We stayed a couple of nights in Puerto Madryn and went for a walk along the coast, then did an organised trip to Penninsula Valdes where we saw elephant seals, penguins, sea lions, guancos (llama type things) and an armadillo! It was a really good day and the tour then left us in the only town (well little village) on the penninsula where we spent another 2 nights. Unfortunately no whales, we knew we were in the wrong season for Southern Right Whales, the ones that there are pictures of EVERYWHERE! But we had hoped we might be lucky and see an Orca as the sea lion pups were just at the age where they start getting in the water. The pups are very cute tho, so maybe it is just as well we didn´t see any Orca attacks!

We did a couple of good walks, one to another sea lion colony and one along the beach. You couldn´t go too many places as the whole thing is private land so there aren´t many paths. But it was nice weather so very pleasant.

Rob - food is pretty similar to home here, but the steak is GOOD and the seafood on the coast amazing. It all comes in pasta/pizza type meals tho so nothing wildly exciting.

After the penninsula we stayed 1 more night in Puerto Madryn and went on a 30km bike ride to see another sea lion colony! Not so comfy on gravel roads.

We went on another tour of the local area, which included a boat trip to see dolphins and a visit to Punta Tombo where you can walk among the Penguins of which there are ALOT! 210,000 breeding pairs in fact!

Then an overnight bus to Bariloche (San Carlos de Bariloche) where we are now. It´s in the Argentinian lake district and really beautiful, a bit like the Swiss alps really. And thanks to some Swiss who settled here the whole town is full of amazing chocolate shops. Apparently the swiss thought more about making chocolate from all the cows than the steak! We have a few day long treks planned, and some rather necessary washing.

Sorry this is a little brief but we are in a rather hot, crowded internet cafe where I am sat on Ben´s knee, so I will continue tomorrow when we need to come and book some accommodation for torres del paine national park in a few weeks.

Love to all (do let us know the news from home, I haven´t had an e-mail for a week :-p)
xKathryn and Ben
