We have done quite alot whilst we´ve been here in Rio. The best bits so far have been going up Corcovado to see Chisto Redentor and climbing the Sugar Loaf which we did with Wilson and we still have the Carnival at the Sambadrome to look forward to tonight! We collected our tickets the other day and have bought some silly costume accessories to wear on the night. We´ve already been to a Street Party (or Bloco as they call it) this morning which reminded us alot of uni - lots of people dressed up and drinking beer - and at 10 in the morning!
Weather here has been hot and humid and although we have had a pretty impressive thunderstorm, it didn´t really clear the air. Anyway, we are getting used to the heat and have had a couple of days where we have done around 10 miles of walking round the city and sights. Yesterday we hired bikes at the Lagoon and attempted to find some waterfalls - unfortunately they proved to be elusive, being within the National Park and at the top of some rather steep hills.
We´ve only had one setback when Kathryn managed to lock both keys for our padlocks in the same locker and we had to get someone to come to the hostel to pick the lock! Took all of 10 seconds! Really secure!
The hostels that we have been staying in are very nice. We think that we´ll go back to the first one where we stayed on our return trip as we got on really well with the owner.
Foodwise (for Rob particularly!) we´ve had some really good Pastes (pastries) and tried the Empanadas and Cheese bread that are local delicacies. The fruit and juices are amazingly tasty and we´ve had açai juice a couple of time which is really refreshing. We did manage to order Berinjela juice the other day which was surprisingly palateable as it turned out to be Aubergine!
Will try to add some photos to our next post if possible.
